Higgins design was inspired by classic French bistros. The restaurant, in a historic building, has a pressed tin ceiling and polished wood floors. Marble and granite countertop colors of sage green, eggplant, terra cotta and bordeaux are echoed in curtains, tapestry upholstery fabric and painted patterns on the ceiling of one of the dining rooms. From Higgins open kitchen, the chef can see every seat in the restaurant. Behind him, two windows expose all the kitchen action to passers-by on Jefferson Street.

"Higgins is great space because it's on three levels, which makes it much more interesting than most restaurants. We kept the original mahogany paneling in the lower dining room, and the upper room has two-tone walls – the upper half of the walls is a color like heavy cream, and the lower half is a dusty green that's the exact color of file boxes in French libraries. The most important thing in any restaurant interior is light. If people don't look good in a restaurant, they don't enjoy themselves. Greg Higgins' food is so beautiful that I've got lots of light: ambient light, electric lamps on the tables, sconces, downlights, and of course there are those huge windows for daylight." - Designer, John Hurst
